Intermittent fasting is an eating pattern that alternates between periods of eating and fasting.

According to a 2021 survey by the International Food Information Council Foundation, about 10% of Americans between the ages of 18 and 80 reported adhering to some sort of intermittent fasting diet.

Common methods include the 16/8 method (fast for 16 hours, eat for 8), Eat-Stop-Eat (24-hour fast once or twice a week), and the 5:2 diet (eat 500-600 calories on two nonconsecutive days of the week).
